Sirumalar Ashram
The Sirumalar Ashram was started at the R.C. School campus in an old engineering shed with the Solemn blessing of His Excellency the Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Fernando D.D., D.C.L, the Bishop of Trichy at 5.30 pm on 20th June 1983. Sirumalar Ashram was started as an aspirantate for the school going students. The Rosarian life began with the recitation of the Holy Rosary before the grotto of Our Lady.
Brothers Michael Raj and Gabriel were the first members with the students and the Brothers started their regular life.
On 2nd March 1988, the corner stone was blessed and laid by Rev. Fr. M.L. Aloysius C.R, the Prior General at Prattiyur in Iniyanur village in a suitable place for the new building of the Sirumalar Community. A small thatched shed was prepared by the side for the community to live in. On June 18, 1988, this small house was blessed by Fr. Ephraem C.R. in a celebrated Holy Mass with Fr. Peter C.R. Our benefactor Mr. Deivasahaya Udayar. He presented to us some 12 acres of land and the rest of the land was bought by us.
It was a red letter day when nine junior brothers, after their novitiate came and occupied the new building even though the building work was not completed on 2nd December 1989. On 2nd February 1990, the 62nd Anniversary of the foundation of the Congregation of the Rosarians, the inauguration of the new building of Sirumalar Ashram took place, Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Fernando D.D, D.C.L., the Bishop of Trichy, blessed the new building, followed by the Solemn Concelebrated Holy Mass.
The Building work of the first floor was started on 16th April 1990. Fr. James the new Prior continued the building work. On 9th June 1990, the Rosarian Philosophate was shifted from R.T.C to Sirumalar Ashram: Third year students arrived from R.T.C. The inauguration of the Philosophy classes began with the “Veni Creator” and the “Schola brevis” presided over by Rev. Dr. Peter Fernando, then Rector of St. Paul’s Seminary, Trichy later became the Bishop of Tuticorin.
The erection of a new grotto of our Blessed Mother in the central lawn of the Ashram over the water tank, fulfilled the need of the community to experience the ever abiding presence of our Blessed Mother in our Community.
On 30th September 1998, the construction work for the new chapel was begun. The Engineers visited the plot and made the site plan ready for the building after testing the soil and water. Sirumalar Ashram witnessed floods in and around the Ashram and Iniyanoor and Prattiyur villages on 12th December 1998. All the roads and fields were flooded. The Ashramites prepared food and supplied to the people affected by floods. They sheltered the people in the ashram who had lost their huts and other basic needs.
The Solemn blessing of the new chapel and grotto took place at on 1st October 1999 the patronal feast of the ashram. Fr. Maria Susai, the Prior has built the chapel most beautifully. The Most Rev. Dr. Peter Fernando, the Auxiliary Bishop of Tuticorin and the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Trichy blessed the chapel and the grotto while Fr. M. L. Aloysius C.R., the Prior General opened and inaugurated both of them. Many faithful, friends and 15 priests participated in the function and the Holy Mass. Our gratitude and love goes to Mrs. Steiner, our benefactor whose generous support we could build the chapel.
On 22nd November 1999, once again we witnessed heavy floods with torrential rain from early morning. Iniyanoor and all our fields were covered up by water. This was a devastating flood which swept away the huts of the people, cattle etc. The Ashram however was able to provide food, clothing and medical aid to the affected people.
The inauguration of the “Enclosure” (donated by Mrs. Steiner) took place after the Holy Mass on 26-04-2000, by Fr. M.L. Aloysius, the Prior General. Fr. Maria Susai, the Prior opened the Enclosure by cutting the ribbon.
Fr. M.L. Aloysius took charge as the Prior of the community on 01-08-2000. Due to the dilapidated condition of the house, the philosophate was shifted to Santhome Ashram, Mullipatti, Trichy. The whole building was demolished.
During the period of Rev. Fr. K.P. Xavier CR Prior General, two acres of land was sold and began to build a new house. In 2019 Rev. Fr. Justin Raj CR was elected Prior General and took over the construction work to complete the building with the support of Generalate fund. The new building was completed and blessed and opened by Most Rev. Dr. Devadas Ambrose, the Bishop of Thanjavur on 22nd April 2019. Now this house has become beautiful and many people, religious and priests come for retreats and other spiritual activities.
