Fatimagiri Ashram

This Ashram is named after Our Lady of Fatima, “Our Lady of the Holy Rosary” our patroness. At the request of Bishop Most Rev. Roche, Father Founder Servant of God B.A. Thomas sends the Servant of God Antony Susainather and Brothers Swaminather, Gnanapragasam and Sebastian on November 5, 1943 to Tuticorin Diocese.

They first landed at Panagudi Hills. Since the place was not suitable for religious life they came to Vadakangulam on February 13, 1944. The Parish Priest Fr. Navamani gave 2 acres of land near Amalivanam and the monks started their works and lit the light of Fatimagiri in India. This is our first monastery in the Indian soil. The Servant of God Antony Susainather, the Pioneer of Fatimagiri, was well known in the Shrine Parish of Our Lady of Snows. With the help of Tuticorin diocese he bought 4 acres of land and constructed a small chapel and a living quarters. On 13th Feb, 1944 this was blessed by Rt. Rev. Dr. Francis Tiburtius Roche SJ, the First Bishop of Tuticorin. With the help of many local benefactors the Servant of God Antony Susainather bought another 30 acres of land for cultivation. The Servant of God B.A Thomas, Founder of our Congregation, himself came to India to see his loving children at Fatimagiri on 25th February 1952. With the permission of Holy See and with due permission of the Bishop of Tuticorin the Novitiate was started on August14, 1954.

Good many vocations came from different places. A new foundation for the Cross Model Church was laid on June 6, 1957 and Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Fernando DD, DCL, blessed it. The important benefactor for this Chapel were Rev Fr. Singrayar Fernando, Mr. C.I.K. Machado, Mr. Harry John, Mrs. Schilling and others.

In memory of the Sacerdotal Golden Jubilee of our founder, on 6th January 1962 a big house was constructed for the brothers and the candidates. The Relics of St. Thomas were kept inside the altar and the most Rev. Dr. J.R. Knox DD, the Apostolic Internuncio, blessed the relics.

The First General Chapter and other meetings were held at Fatimagiri Ashram.

The Servant of God Antony Susainather underwent his 14 years of way of the cross here and started his journey towards the heavenly Jerusalem on 8th June, 1968 and his body was laid entombed in the front corner of the Church. Even today a good number of people visit his cemetery and pray to him and through his intercession many receive favours and miracles. Most of our senior priests and brothers lived and developed the house. The Novitiate was shifted from Fatimagiri to Pushpavanam and a retreat house was constructed for the priests, religious and laity, who regularly come to make their retreats.

Fatimagiri ashram celebrated its Silver Jubilee and Golden Jubilee in 1969 and 1994 respectively. On 15th February 1994, Fatimagiri Ashram celebrated the twenty fifth death anniversary of the Servant of God Antony Susainather. Nearly 700 people participated in the requiem Mass. Rev. Mgr. Peter Fernando, the Vicar General of Tuticorin Diocese presided over the Mass. The platinum Jubilee of our Indian Foundation was celebrated at Fatimagiri Ashram in February 2019 under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Justin Raj CR, the Prior General of the Congregation of the Rosarians. The grotto of our Lady of Pieta was constructed on the centenary birthday of the Servant of God Antony Susainather.

Fatimagiri Ashram is one of the important formation centres earlier and even now. Many of the apostolic students and aspirants were given training according to our way of life and the Gospel values. This community serves to many people whoever comes to our Ashram, particularly in their spiritual needs, Holy Mass, Confession, Recollections, Retreat and Spiritual Directions.

This is a holy place where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed daily and adored, the holy tomb of Servant of God Antony Susainather and other pioneer Founder members are found. At present Rev. Fr. Sagayaraj CR is the Prior; there are other five priests and three senior brothers and school going students are in the community.
